Things to do in Langkawi

Everyone has villages to go home to during celebrations, especially ones like Hari Raya, Lunar New Year or Deepavali. So do I. It is not actually my village, per say, but it is somewhere my family will go to for long holidays. It is the place my father is born and grew up at, it is Langkawi.

This is where I annually go back to for Hari Raya. Pulau Langkawi is an island located in the state of Kedah, and is an archipelago of 99 islands. There a few smaller islands around it, which tourist would found appearing as they approach the jetty. Among some habitable islands in the archipelago is Pulau Langkawi, Pulau Dayang Bunting and Pulau Rebak. However, they are only accessible by motorboats (except Pulau Langkawi) and most tourist would flock over to Langkawi, because of the complete facility and the more city-ish vibe to the island.

For this first part of the whole entry, I would recommend a place and thing for you to go and do, from my own experiences.

Among the activities I recommend for people to do and places for you to visit is:

ISLAND HOPPING, EAGLE SPOTTING AND KILIM KARST GEOFOREST PARK

A common thing people (families and friends alike) usually do in Langkawi is that they go island hopping. To do this, you go to Kuah town, and go to the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park. There are several packages provided, at different prices, for you to choose from with a range of different program to be explored. There are also private cruise companies that offer this service, and sometimes it is much cheaper, but if you go by these companies, they will not pass through the Kilim jetty, seeing that its' jetty is in the river and not directly by the sea. If you want to visit the mangrove forests, the Kelawar Cave and the Pulau Beras Basah beach, then it is adviceable for you to go through the Kilim route first. You can google for more infos either on Trip Advisor, Lonely Planet or just ask the locals. Bear in mind that the packages are usually priced at RM200+ (If I'm not mistaken, the cheapest package is RM250 and it is for 3 hours, without the island hopping package available). If you go through the RM250 package, then the flow of events will go like this;

1. Visiting the Crocodile Cave

The crocodile cave is a name local gave to a semi-underwater cave in Kilim. If the tide is high, then the cave will not be accessible. In the cave, they will see fishes going around the boat, and we will be able to interact with them. This cave is sort of a shortcut, and you will be redirected through the river by passing through the cave.

2. Going to the floating restaurant

Along the river, there are some floating restaurants, and they have fresh supply of seafood. (Bear in mind that it is a bit pricey than the restaurants on land, so bring extra money with you.) They are made out of wood, and is floating in the river, but is held down by inertia and buoyancy. (Please don't trust me on this, I'm no expert at physics. But the restaurants stay where they are, they just do.)

3. Visiting the Pulau Beras Basah's beach

If you ever watched the Senario movie, there is this beach where they are stranded at. This beach is the one you'll be visiting at Pulau Beras Basah. To get to this beach, you are to pass through the sea and then to the beach!

TBD.... because there's a lot to be told...
